Nurse/CNA/PCA, PT Live-in Position Open (Henrico, VA)
at in Henrico, VA
Immediate opening for a private-duty nurse, student nurse or experienced CNA/PCA to care for elderly lady with advanced Alzheimer’s disease in her home located in Henrico County on Monument Avenue. The minimum shifts available are 2 consecutive days (48-hours). Note: We cannot split into 12-hour shifts due to constraints by patient’s long-term care insurance. Pay is $120 per 24-hour shift, as a “live-in” nurse.* Work shifts require 2 or 3 consecutive days. Weekends may be available if requested, or partial weekends may be required once or twice a month. We pay small bonuses throughout the year for each nurse for extra efforts, and you will be paid generous overtime for the 6 major holidays, if you are asked and agree to work any of those days.
*For anyone looking for an hourly job who doesn’t understand the live-in pay concept, please read: Nursing agencies also hire 24-hour “live-in” cases that are paid a base fee for patients such as advanced Alzheimer’s who spend 65-70% of 24 hours sleeping and/or resting. We are looking for experienced caregivers who understand that the actual hours “working” equate to approximately 6-8 hours out of 24. This job is for the right fit, someone who understands Alzheimer’s disease, understands the patient at this stage spends more time sleeping, resting, is educated well enough to understand that you have autonomy to manage your time to get the light housework required done, and still enjoy reading, watching cable TV, relaxing, when the patient is resting or at night! If you are looking for an hourly job, this is not for you! We cannot change terms of employment, suggest that you move on to find an hourly job that better fits your needs than wasting our and your time trying to argue the point. This patient is on a small fixed income and her long-term care insurance benefits pay for this position. Her insurance company and all their healthcare experts have advised that we hire under this pay arrangement. This job also provides free room and board (This includes cable TV and basic meals during your shift).
We require an experienced, mature and dependable person who will regularly show up on time for work, and must be mature enough to handle a live-in position with 2-3 days on the job, then 5-6 days off to allow for the other 2 nurses’ schedules. We usually have a team of 3 nurses working 2-3 day shifts each month, averaging 10-11 days monthly. We may ask you to fill in an extra day or two for another nurse if they are out for any reason. Applicants MUST BE NON-SMOKERS due to patient’s condition! Shifts run either 4 p.m. on day of arrival to 4 p.m. on the day your shift is over during winter, OR 4:30 p.m. arrival and 4:30 p.m. at the end of your shift when daylight savings time takes effect in the spring/summer.
We provide ample equipment to help make your job easier handling the patient, such as a walker, transport chair/wheelchair, recliner w/remote lift, transport tub bench, hospital bed with remote, portable color baby monitor with zoom lens and sound, bed alarm and more. The patient is 5’2” and weighs approx. 105 lbs., is still somewhat mobile with your assistance using a gait belt to help her walk.
It is vital that applicants have professional training in proper transfer methods for bathing and moving from a bed to a chair, etc., and have a firm understanding of Alzheimer’s disease. You are provided your own bathroom, separate bedroom with cable TV, small refrigerator, and linens. You are responsible for complete care of patient when on duty, along with light cooking and meal preparation, feeding the patient, keeping her hydrated, take her to bathroom every 2 hours, and light household duties that are expected in every CNA job offered thru agencies. The patient sleeps an average of 12 hours at night and has a healthy appetite, so you need plenty of patience feeding her. Using cell phones for personal calls or texting while you are feeding, bathing or otherwise caring for the patient is not allowed because this is your only one-on-one time with her. You will need to keep her medication schedule in line with the other nurses’ schedules, a.m., noon, and bedtime pills. The patient spends a great part of her day resting in her recliner between meals and bathroom breaks, but must be repositioned often using the remote to avoid pressure wounds. We have had excellent care to-date and want to keep it that way! This job is for the serious applicant willing to join our “family” of caregivers. It is not usually advisable for someone with small children who may need your care at home or anyone who would have problems lifting and transferring a 105-lb. lady from a transport chair to her bed or toilet. We have had several nursing students who studied for their nursing exams and passed them while caring for this lovely lady, so there is plenty of “down” time to study and read, when the patient is resting during the day and at night. However, we expect you to take the job seriously, no friends or relatives allowed on the premises while you are at work (includes nights). You are welcome to take the patient for brief walks around the neighborhood (in her wheelchair) to get out in nice weather! There are sidewalks for safety and she seems to enjoy the change of environment looking at the birds, pretty flowers blooming, etc.! There is only a short step from the front door to the sidewalk, which meets up with the street sidewalk, so this is a great way to avoid feeling “shut in” on your days with the patient. Generally, you will have 2 or 3 day shifts, then will be off 5-6 days, for an average of 10-12 work days per month, unless another nurse is out for some reason, and we ask you to fill in extra days that month.

We think you will enjoy working here if you are able to arrange 2-3 days to earn $240-$360 each shift. You are provided free room & board during your shift, along with free meals, which include healthy, well-balanced meals. If you prefer special food, snacks and sodas, you will need to provide those for yourself and keep them in the small refrigerator in your room. The patient is generally very pleasant when everyone follows a good schedule for her good health. Thank you and we look forward to meeting you!
